Mark Ramprakash hoping for head coach’s role after England dismissal

Mark Ramprakash was fired as England’s Test batting coach for this summer’s Ashes last week but is now on the lookout for a head coach’s role.

In a frank 30-minute interview with BBC 5Live, Ramprakash revealed he had a short conversation with new director of cricket Ashley Giles that informed him of his dismissal.

Graham Thorpe, the white-ball batting coach, is expected to take over temporarily, with Paul Collingwood stepping up to replace assistant coach Paul Farbrace, who has left for Warwickshire.

“Any time there is a change of management there can be movement. I was signed up by Andrew Strauss. With a new man comes different ideas,” Ramprakash said. “I have been lucky to do this job for five years and no one has an automatic right to keep doing it.”

Ramprakash made it to the final four — along with Farbrace — for the Middlesex head coach’s role, which went to Stuart Law, and will continue to seek such opportunities.

“I’ve done it for five years and I’ve been really lucky. The environment’s been fantastic, I’ve worked with some great people behind the scenes — physios, doctors, analysts.

"I’ve worked with some great coaches and learnt a lot off Trevor Bayliss, Peter Moores, Paul Farbrace, Andy Flower. So yes, I feel in a good position if a position of more responsibility came along. I don’t want to get pigeon-holed as just a Test match batting coach.”

Middlesex are unlikely to sign an overseas player for their early season Championship fixtures but could look for a batsman for the Royal London One-Day Cup, when Eoin Morgan and Paul Stirling join their national squads at the end of April.
