Mark Phelan: What lasts longer: A new truck or chemically augmented cherries?

Nissan spread some unexpected holiday cheer with a fruitcake this season.

Automakers frequently send press kits, lists of awards and product highlights making the case for their vehicles to jurors for the North American Car, Truck and Utility Vehicle of the Year awards.

Nissan public relations served a slice of humor in their campaign for the new Titan by comparing their pickup's longevity to the nearly indestructible dessert dish.

The cake's label read:

"Holiday fruitcake: The one food that might last longer than the 2017 Nissan Titan's industry leading 5 year/100,000 mile warranty.

"Recent Titan buyers will be covered until December, 2021 ...

"We can't guarantee the fruitcake."

The package also included the more traditional feature list, but still with a nod to the kitchen. Nissan described the cabin as "a slice of serenity," thanks to increased noise insulation.

Like the new Titan, the cake was a pleasant surprise: tasty, despite weighing as much as a cinder block. Unlike the Titan, which adopted more mainstream looks this year, it was easier to appreciate the cake if you closed your eyes to ignore the traffic-light-bright red and green cherries.
