Mark McKenzie emerges as Celtic transfer target as America defender continues meteoric rise

Celtic are eyeing a move for USA defender Mark McKenzie after thanking their fans for backing them to the hilt in astonishing numbers.

The Philadelphia Union centre-back is on the radar of the Hoops as they hunt the globe for new faces to boost their squad for the historic crack at 10 In A Row.

Record Sport understands an astonishing 50,000 plus punters have coughed up for season tickets at Celtic Park to help bankroll any splash on players.

McKenzie is among the central defenders being closely monitored for the new term as boss Neil Lennon looks to replace Jozo Simunovic.

The 21-year-old has risen through the ranks of the American national set-up and was handed a first senior cap by his country five months ago after captaining his nation at the 2020 Under-20 World Cup in Poland.

McKenzie has sparkled for Union in the MLS since his debut in 2018 and can also operate in the left-back slot. The stopper, who hails from the Bronx in New York, has 18 months left on his current deal, but
can be snapped up for less than £1million.

Lennon saluted the fans after it was revealed over 50,000 season ticket renewals were in with 17,000 on the waiting list.

He said: “We are overwhelmed by the support and it’s something we don’t take for granted.

“It is huge inspiration for the players. Even though the supporters might not be there initially they are still with us.”
