Mark Lawrenson predicts Leeds United will get 2022 off to a fast start against Burnley

BBC pundit Mark Lawrenson has predicted a win for Leeds United against their relegation rivals Burnley on Sunday.

The former Liverpool defender said the Whites have “shipped a lot of goals” in the pre-Christmas period but said he did not expect Burnley to do similar damage at Elland Road on Sunday.

Leeds United are currently just two places above Burnley, who sit third-bottom of the table inside the relegation zone. Five points separate the two teams, but Burnley have two games in hand over Leeds.

In the reverse fixture in August, Leeds got a 1-1 draw at Turf Moor. In that match the Whites went behind thanks to a goal from former Leeds striker Chris Wood, before Patrick Bamford drew things level.

Writing in his weekly Premier League predictions for the BBC, Lawrenson wrote : “Leeds shipped a lot of goals before their Christmas fixtures were postponed because of a Covid outbreak at the club, but they should have some more players fit and available now and I really don't see Burnley doing the same damage as Manchester City and Arsenal in any case.

“Both these teams have had a disappointing time of it in the first half of the season, but the Clarets are in much deeper trouble at the bottom of the table.

“They don't have the biggest squad so it will be interesting to see what they do during the January transfer window to try to climb the table.”

He ended with a prediction for the score: 2-1 to Leeds.
