Mark Lawrenson issues heartfelt tribute after the death of his mother

Former Liverpool defender Mark Lawrenson has issued a heartfelt tribute following the death of his mother.

The pundit, who played international football for the Republic of Ireland, took to Twitter this morning to share the heartbreaking news and paid tribute to 'our beloved Mum'.

The 62-year-old, who beat cancer back in 2018 , described her as a "mentor" to him "through good and bad times".

He tweeted: "We said farewell to our beloved mum/grandma yesterday.

"We only have one mother and they are your mentors in so many different ways through good and bad times.

"Thank you-not sure I told you enough how much I loved you...RIP."

The former Liverpool star had spoken about his mother in previous interviews and it was through her that he qualified to play for the Republic of Ireland.

Between 1981-1988, Lawrenson made 356 appearances for the Reds winning a combined 10 trophies.

Dozens of messages of support rolled in from other ex-pros, football journalists, and members of the public.

Former Republic of Ireland and Nottingham Forest midfielder Andy Reid tweeted: "Condolences Mark".

BT Sport commentator Jim Beglin said: "Very sorry for your loss Lawro".

TV reporter Sam Ashoo said: "I'm very sorry to hear that mark, take care."

One twitter said: "Sorry for your loss, doesn't matter what age we are it still hurts when they leave us. Take care."
