Mark Ingram wearing a new jersey number in second stint with Saints — for now

There’s been plenty of speculation about what jersey number Mark Ingram will choose after returning to the New Orleans Saints in a trade with the Houston Texans, and this subplot still isn’t wrapped up. He took the practice field on Friday in the No. 14 jersey that had been assigned to rookie wide receiver Kawaan Baker, who took No. 19 — but the Saints clarified on Twitter that it “is not finalized yet.”

Ingram’s most memorable years in New Orleans happened while he was wearing No. 22, the same jersey number he used at Alabama. For now, that belongs to defensive back C.J. Gardner-Johnson who has offered to sell it back to the veteran. Before that, Ingram wore No. 28 for the Saints, but it’s been claimed by his backup Devine Ozigbo.

He’s also used No. 21 with the Baltimore Ravens (but that’s been chosen by cornerback Bradley Roby) and No. 2 in his games with the Houston Texans this year (which, obviously, belongs to Jameis Winston). So what’s next?

Maybe he and Gardner-Johnson cut a deal. Or maybe he goes in another new direction. The No. 14 isn’t a bad look, and the inversion of Alvin Kamara’s No. 41 is terrific synergy. It also matches the number worn by New Orleans Pelicans All-Star Brandon Ingram (no relation). But it doesn’t sound like he’s sticking with it.
