Mark Footitt looks to put 'terrible injury' behind him after joining Lancashire on loan

Mark Footitt has joined Lancashire on loan as he looks to get his career back on track after recovering from his "terrible injury".

The left arm fast bowler was seen as a match-winning signing when he returned to Nottinghamshire from Surrey in July 2017.

However, little has gone right for him since then, with the 33-year-old playing just three times for Notts during his second stint for the club.

All those appearances came at the end of last season, with Footitt blighted by a stress fracture of the neck before then, but the former England hopeful is fit again now with a revised bowling action.

Luke Wood joins Northamptonshire on loan from Nottinghamshire

"When I came back here in the middle of 2017 I'd been playing quite a lot at Surrey. I got a terrible injury with my neck, a stress fracture," he said.

"It's taken probably up until last October to get back to what I do best. I'm really looking forward to the season.

"We  looked at my action and thought I need to straighten my legs up. I was crossing them over too much and that was what was causing the injury.

"I've done a lot of work on it in the winter and it's worked well in pre-season.

"It's not the nicest thing to be injured. You want to be around the lads and seeing everyone do well.

"It's been a frustrating time, but it's the way professional sport is. Players get injured and someone else is waiting in the wings to capitalise."

Footitt will spend a month at Old Trafford playing red ball cricket and is set to feature in games against Loughborough MCCU and Middlesex. It is understood the loan deal was a recent development.

There was talk over the winter that Footitt would leave Trent Bridge, but the former Derbyshire man says that was not something he wanted as he fights for a long-term future with Notts.

"I always back myself to force my way into the side when you look at my red ball record. If you get a chance then take it," he said.

Samit Patel has a message for anyone who would take his place after revealing what went wrong last year

"If you look at our team on paper, there is no better one in the country. We can challenge for all three trophies and that's exciting whether you're playing or not playing."

Meanwhile, Notts will start their season against Yorkshire in Division One of the County Championship.

Overseas signing James Pattinson is yet to link up with his teammates, but Stuart Broad is available in a game which will pit him against England Test captain Joe Root.
