Mark Drakeford pledges to work to find a way to end compulsory masks in school clasrooms

Pupils should wear masks in secondary schools for the rest of the term but that advice may change next term, First Minister Mark Drakeford has indicated.

Speaking at today's coronavirus briefing First Minister Mark Drakeford said advice on face coverings in schools is being updated.

"We are (also) publishing a statement by our scientific advisers about the use of face coverings in schools," he said.

"There will be no immediate change, but we will work with schools, local authorities and teaching unions to find ways for the future that they do not need to be worn in every classroom, every day."

Some parents say their children are finding it hard to wear masks all day, especially in the hot weather. You can read more about that here

At the moment secondary pupils are asked to wear masks in all areas of schools where they cannot socially distance, including in lessons.

Teachers in both secondary and primary schools are asked to wear masks whenever they cannot socially distance.

As the briefing took place the Education Minister Jeremy Miles also tweeted: "As we continue to monitor the spread of the delta variant, we’re recommending current advice for face-coverings in schools will remain in place until the end of term.

"We’ll work with the education sector over the coming weeks to prepare revised advice for September."

The First Minister also announced that residential education centres can begin to re-open in the latest easing of restrictions.

"We will begin the reopening of residential outdoor education centres, starting with primary school-age children.," he told the briefing.
