Mark Dantonio ties Duffy Daugherty as All-Time Winningest Coach in MSU Football History

Mark Dantonio’s now has an argument as being the greatest in MSU history as he has just tied Duffy Daugherty to become the All-Time Winningest Coach in Michigan State Football history with 109 wins.

Daugherty was the Head Coach at Michigan State from 1954 to 1972 and he won two national championships in 1965 and 1966. Of course, that was in an era where the national championship was a regular-season award and not awarded as the result of a championship game. Daugherty’s 1965 team lost to UCLA in the Rose Bowl and the 1966 squad tied #1 Notre Dame at Spartan Stadium in their last game of the season and would share a piece of their championship with the Fighting Irish.

I think most fans would give the nod to Daugherty still because of the accolades, even if the league was far different back in the 60s, but you cannot discount Dantonio’s persistent excellence, Big Ten Championships, big Bowl wins, and College Football Playoff berth. He has brought a culture to East Lansing that has produced a number of NFL players and achievements at the college level. But what do you think? Vote in our poll below.
