Mark Dantonio comments on tying Duffy Daugherty’s win record

The major story of Michigan State’s win over Western Michigan was the explosive offense. The other story of the game was that Mark Dantonio tied Duffy Daugherty’s wins record, this means that Dantonio is now tied with Daugherty as the winningest football coach in school history.

Dantonio didn’t comment on the record at his postgame press conference but did take a few minutes to reflect on the achievement on a teleconference this Sunday afternoon.

Chris Solari of the Detroit Free Press reported Dantonio’s comments on the teleconference:

“For me personally, it’s long-term, maybe that’s something you can point to. But it’s much more rewarding when you get the win and everything is going correctly and you have positive things happening on all sides of the ball,” Dantonio said. “You feel better about things when everything is moving forward, especially at this time of year. And I think that was a big win for us. Now we have an opportunity to focus on our next challenge.”

In typical Dantonio fashion, he is more concerned about the present and team accomplishments rather than personal accolades:

“Being 3-0 will be more important than 110 short-term,” Dantonio said. “Long-term, though, again, pretty much like I’ve said — it’s a moment in time where a lot of people can collectively say we were involved in this.”
