Mark Cuban Says Nvidia Is the IPO 'Funding Everyone and Anyone,' but AI Financing Isn't Bulletproof: 'One Breakthrough... Could Crumble It'

Mark Cuban

Billionaire investor Mark Cuban on Tuesday compared Nvidia Corp.‘s (NASDAQ:NVDA) role in the artificial intelligence boom to the IPO frenzy of the dot-com era, warning that a single breakthrough by a rival chipmaker or a misstep “could crumble” the market.

Nvidia Has Become AI’s ‘IPO’

In a post on X, Cuban said Nvidia was effectively “subsidizing everyone,” but added that only deepened the credit risks surrounding the AI buildout.

He compared the company’s role in the current AI boom to the IPO frenzy during the dot-com era, saying the chipmaker was effectively funding “everyone and anyone.”

Cuban said the AI boom remained vulnerable to unexpected disruptions, warning that even “one breakthrough in another chip provider, or a misstep, and it all could crumble. It’s truly scary.”

Credit Risks in the AI Buildout

Cuban’s comments came in response to an X post that identified Oracle Corp. (NYSE:ORCL) and AI cloud providers, or “NeoClouds,” as the weakest links in the AI infrastructure financing boom.

The investor said the broader concern was Nvidia’s role in financing the AI ecosystem, adding that the credit risks extended “far beyond Oracle.”

Nvidia’s Role in AI Financing Draws Questions

Nvidia’s financing strategy has become a focal point in the AI investment boom after The Wall Street Journal reported that the company was exploring a $250 billion financing guarantee tied to OpenAI‘s planned Ohio data center.

The discussions have renewed debate over whether supplier-backed financing reflects a healthy way to fund AI infrastructure or creates a self-reinforcing cycle in which Nvidia helps finance demand for its own products.

Earlier this week, Seaport Research analyst Jay Goldberg warned that vendor financing has historically backfired, citing Lucent Technologies, Inc.‘s strategy during the telecom boom.

“These kinds of financing usually don’t end well,” Goldberg said.

Price Action: Shares of NVDA gained 0.25% on Tuesday at $197.01 and edged 0.31% higher in after-hours trading.

Benzinga edge rankings indicate NVDA has a Momentum score in the 40th percentile and a Growth score in the 98th percentile.
