The Dallas Mavericks will retire the number 24 in honor of Kobe Bryant, who died in a helicopter crash Sunday.
Mavs owner Mark Cuban announced the honor in a news release Sunday night.
This is especially rare for a player who never wore a Mavericks jersey.
"We are shocked and saddened by the devastating news of the passing of Kobe Bryant and his daughter, Gianna. Kobe was an ambassador for our game, a decorated legend and a global icon. Above all, he was a loving and dedicated father," Cuban said in the release. "Kobe's legacy transcends basketball, and our organization has decided that the number 24 will never again be worn by a Dallas Maverick."
Bryant, 41, wore Nos. 8 and 24 during 20 seasons with the Los Angeles Lakers. He spent his entire career with the Lakers.
"Our hearts go out to all the lives lost and the families impacted by this terrible tragedy. We send our thoughts and prayers to Vanessa and the family, the Lakers organization and Kobe Bryant fans everywhere."
Cuban paid tribute to Bryant in a series of messages posted on Twitter earlier Sunday.
"May your memory always be a blessing," Cuban posted on Twitter.
