Mark Cagney's Ireland AM co-host Alan Hughes surprised and devastated to be losing his 'TV husband'

Mark Cagney’s Ireland AM co-host Alan Hughes said it’ll be a sad day when he loses his TV husband of 20 years at the end of the month.

The presenter also admitted he was surprised to hear the 63-year-old is leaving.

Speaking of his shock, Hughes told the Irish Mirror: “Of course it came as a surprise but at the same time he was getting up so early for so many years.

“He’s the ultimate professional. He’s been doing it for so long, he’s given his life to it. I wish him all the best and I’m going to miss him terribly.”

Having worked together on the breakfast show since it began in 1999, Hughes admitted he is going to miss his TV ‘husband’ when his last day on set comes around.

The panto star also noted that in their two decades working together, the pair never argued once.

He said: “We’ve become great friends, it’s been 20 years together, he’s become like family. We clicked, we always had this connection and it’s going to be a very sad day on the 31st [of July] for me.

“We’ve never had a cross word in 20 years, it’s amazing. That to me is a testament to the man he is.”

He went on to joke: “He’s always going on about his wives, but he’s had a husband for 20 years as well.”
