Mark Bowen counts on major Reading boost for Leeds United trip

Reading manager Mark Bowen admits a rare breather for his side ahead of their trip to Leeds United may help them shape a result at Elland Road.

The Royals have faced little respite since the start of 2020, cramming in an impressive 13 games alone since New Year's Day.

A pair of FA Cup replays, in both the third and fourth rounds, has stretched them thin over the subsequent weeks, with a fifth-round tie against Premier League side Sheffield United to come at the start of next month.

Having enjoyed a full week between games for the first time since January 11, Bowen hopes his side's chance to take stock will only improve their prospects.

"It’s important to manage this week well, balancing the rest and the work on the training ground we do," he told Reading's website. "The league is challenging which we all know, but it is how we cope this week that will determine the Leeds game and further.

"After the Leeds game, we have five games in just over two weeks, so we go right back into it, but it’s good to get that respite, both mentally and physically.

"It’s hard for the staff and the players, with the messaging we all get with a game every three or four days.

"I’ve moaned about not having enough time on the training ground, but I still have that decision on how much we do on the training ground and how much time off they get."
