Mark Allen returns to hero's welcome in Antrim following recent success

Antrim snooker champion Mark Allen received a hero's welcome on returning to his home town following his recent win at last month's World Grand Prix.

Allen has been in a rich vein of form recently, having also claimed the UK Championship and NI Open at the end of 2022.

A special reception to recognise the 36-year-old's achievements was hosted by the Mayor of Antrim and Newtownabbey Alderman Stephen Ross at Antrim Civic Centre.

Speaking at the reception the Mayor said: “I am thrilled with Mark’s recent form, which has seen him winning the UK Championship and World Grand Prix in style and retaining his Northern Ireland Open title before a home crowd in Belfast.

“Mark is a great ambassador for the sport and Antrim, and is also a role model for those coming up through the ranks. He is very deserving of his recent success and I wish him all the best for the future.”

Allen became only the 10th player in history to win three ranking titles in the same season when he lifted the World Grand Prix, with his win elevating him to a career-high third in the world rankings.

The Antrim cue star added: “I would like to thank the Council for hosting this event and for their continued support.

"I am proud to call Antrim my home and I would like to pay tribute to the local fans who are on the journey with me.”

Allen is looking forward to more success this year as he prepares to take on Alfie Burden in the first round of The Welsh Open which begins on February 13.
