The highly controversial Republican congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene has been widely criticised after she laughed off a question about children dying from Covid-19.
The 47-year-old, who has been accused of spreading conspiracy theories and is an ardent supporter of Donald Trump, was briefly suspended from Twitter earlier this week after she was deemed to have spread misinformation about the pandemic.
Greene had claimed that coronavirus was only a threat to people who were either obese or over the age of 65 and therefore vaccines shouldn’t be required for everyone.
During a press conference about her ban from Twitter, the representative from Georgia was asked by reporter Tia Mitchell of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution: “Do you feel any responsibility for keeping people in Georgia safe? There are children, skinny people, who have died of the coronavirus. Do you feel any responsibility?”
In a bizarre moment, Greene laughed at the question and appeared to show no compassion for those that have died. In response, she said: “Tia, you crack me up. You know what, I think people’s responsibility is their own. To read the information â and it’s everywhere. You can’t go by any street corner practically and not see something about COVID-19. I believe in people’s own individual responsibility to read, to find out and to make their own decision.”

I was the reporter who asked this question after listening to Rep. Greene downplay the impact of COVID-19 on young people & those who aren't obese. I asked if she feels any responsibility to people in Georgia to protect them. She said the responsibility is their own. https://t.co/lKmOC4s9bx

Her staggering response to this question stunned many who couldn’t believe that Greene could laugh at the thought of people, especially children dying from this deadly disease, with some branding her a ‘monster.’

Mitchell also asked Greene if she believed in science to which she said in response: “I believe in God. And of course, there is science. I don’t worship science or think that science rules everything. I believe that God rules everything.”
She was also asked if she has taken the vaccine to which she claimed the question was a “violation of my HIPAA rights.”
Question: Have you yourself been vaccinated?

Despite having a largely successful uptake of the Covid vaccine in the United States, the new delta variant has led to an uptick in cases across the country with more than 60,000 people testing positive on Tuesday alone.
