Marjorie Taylor Greene shares what hit her ‘hard’ and she’s just embarrassing herself again

Marjorie Taylor Greene has once again taken to social media to share what she claims “hit hard,” but instead of landing a thoughtful or impactful point, she’s managed to embarrass herself yet again.

After Democratic Socialist Zohran Mamdani won his New York primary in a landslide, the far-right outrage machine did what it does best: meltdown. Leading the charge, naturally, was the Georgia Congresswoman who shared a bizarre, likely AI-generated image of the Statue of Liberty, draped in a burqa. Oops, it was supposed to be a dire warning!

The implication was clear enough: Mamdani is Muslim, therefore democracy is under threat. Never mind that Mamdani was born in Uganda, raised in New York, and has said his family is culturally but not strictly religious. Greene didn’t need facts.

MAGA = “religious freedom Christians only”

Greene has long claimed to be a champion of religious liberty, but as always with MAGA ideology, there’s an asterisk the size of Trump’s ego: Religious freedom means Christian freedom. Her post was one of many dog whistles blasted into a bullhorn this week, part of a broader meltdown across the far-right ecosystem.

Laura Loomer, an alt-right provocateur and failed congressional candidate, chimed in, stating, among other posts, “There will be another 9/11 in NYC and @ZohranKMamdani will be to blame.”

Turning up the volume even further, Turning Point USA’s Charlie Kirk posted in part, “The lesson from New York City is that BOTH illegal and legal immigration can ruin your country,” referring to Mamdani.

Of course, none of them addressed Mamdani’s actual platform, which focuses on housing, healthcare, and demilitarizing the police. They’re too busy trying to meme their way into another January 6.

Mamdani’s win and why it scares the right

Mamdani, first elected to the New York State Assembly in 2020, represents parts of Queens and is one of the most prominent Muslim lawmakers in the country. Born in Kampala, Uganda, to a South Asian family and raised in New York City, Mamdani has spoken about being culturally Muslim but has kept his religious views largely private. That hasn’t stopped right-wing pundits from making him a stand-in for every Islamophobic panic they can dredge up.

His decisive primary win—despite being outspent and targeted by pro-Israel PACs—was a gut punch to establishment Democrats and MAGA trolls alike. Mamdani has been a vocal critic of Israel’s war in Gaza and a fierce advocate for Palestinian rights.

His stance has made him a lightning rod in a political climate where criticizing Israel is enough to get you labeled a terrorist sympathizer by the right and a liability by centrist Democrats.

The MAGA vision: liberty? More like Christian nationalism

The AI-generated Statue of Liberty in a hijab might’ve been ridiculous, but the message it carried was chilling: in MAGA-world, religious symbols are only acceptable when they’re draped in crosses and swaddled in American flags. Greene’s post reveals what many on the far right believe but rarely say out loud—religious freedom is not a universal value. It’s a weapon to be deployed only when the religion in question fits their Christian nationalist vision.

Despite their obsession with “freedom,” Greene and her ilk aren’t upset about a theoretical loss of liberty. They’re upset that democracy sometimes results in people who don’t look like them, pray like them, or vote like them winning elections. Mamdani didn’t just win a primary—he exposed the right’s performative commitment to liberty for the fraud it is. For those keeping score: MAGA’s fear isn’t that America is losing its freedom. It’s that it’s finally living up to it.
