In a fresh round of irony-laced political theater, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) has waved the “Back the Blue” banner by calling a former top Capitol cop a liar.
In a post on X, Greene amplified January 6 conspiracy theories, claiming that former Speaker Nancy Pelosi refused to deploy the National Guard during the Capitol riot and suggesting that Antifa and undercover agents incited the violence.
The timing? Perhaps not accidental. Greene’s latest outburst comes just as Donald Trump faces widespread criticism for sending the National Guard into Los Angeles to suppress anti-ICE protests—an aggressive move that’s drawing comparisons to authoritarian crackdowns around the globe.

In her June 11 post, Greene responded to former Capitol Police Chief Steven Sund’s claim that multiple requests for National Guard assistance were denied ahead of the January 6 insurrection. “Yes he did,” Greene wrote, referring to Donald Trump allegedly authorizing the Guard, before launching into a tirade blaming Pelosi and shadowy “agent provocateurs” for the day’s chaos. Let’s break it down:

No, the Speaker of the House, at the time Nancy Pelosi, does not possess the authority to deploy the D.C. National Guard. This power resides with the President of the United States, through the Secretary of Defense. On January 6, 2021, Donald Trump was President, and Christopher Miller was the acting Secretary of Defense.
While initial requests for Guard assistance from Capitol Police Chief Sund were indeed denied, those denials came from the Capitol Police Board, which includes the House and Senate Sergeants at Arms and the Architect of the Capitol. While the Sergeants at Arms report to their respective chambers, they do not fall under the direct operational command of the Speaker.
Furthermore, records and congressional investigations confirm that President Trump did not formally authorize the widespread deployment of the National Guard to the Capitol until hours after the building had been breached.
Who is Chief Steven Sund?

Meanwhile, Steven Sund was the Capitol Police Chief on January 6, 2021. He resigned shortly after the riot. In the years since, he’s spoken openly about his belief that intelligence warnings were ignored and that his requests for National Guard support were denied. In the tweet Greene quoted, Sund reiterated that he made “multiple requests” for Guard assistance on January 3, but was “DENIED each time.”
Those denials came from the Capitol Police Board, which includes the House Sergeant at Arms and Senate Sergeant at Arms, both of whom report to Congress but are not under Pelosi’s direct command.
And guess who Trump appointed to head the Pentagon at the time? That would be Christopher Miller, acting Defense Secretary, who has acknowledged he was wary of “overmilitarizing” the response. In short, Trump had the power. He didn’t use it.
Greene’s greatest hits (of misinformation)
Greene’s claim about “Antifa and agent provocateurs” has been repeatedly debunked. The FBI has said there’s no evidence Antifa was behind the attack. The mob was filled with Trump supporters—some of whom have since been convicted and sentenced (and now pardoned), including Proud Boys and Oath Keepers leaders.
So, while Greene continues to posture as a champion of police, she’s also undermining a former police chief with firsthand experience of January 6—all to prop up a narrative that paints Trump as the victim and Pelosi as the villain. It’s an “honor” only Greene could bestow: backing law enforcement, but only if they play along.
