Mariyappan Thangavelu in quarantine, Tek Chand to be India's flag-bearer at Tokyo Paralympics opening ceremony

NEW DELHI: Mariyappan Thangavelu will not be part of India's opening ceremony at the Tokyo Paralympics on Tuesday evening. He has been replaced by shot-putter Tek Chand as the country's flag bearer.

On his flight to Tokyo, Mariyappan came in close contact with a Covid positive foreign passenger. Though on reaching the village, he has been tested for six days and all his reports have come negative, but the Tokyo Paralympics Organising Committee on Tuesday advised the Indian contingent officials at the Athletes Village not to make Mariyappan participate in the opening ceremony for the safety of fellow participants.

Mariyappan, who competes in the men's high jump F42 event, has been quarantining in his room in the Village for possible exposure to Covid-19 as per the health safety protocols defined by the Japanese government.

The ceremony starts at 4:30pm IST today.
