A member of the Ukrainian National Guard who was holding out in Mariupol's Azovstal steelworks has reportedly been killed, just three days after marrying a fellow soldier.

An unknown number of Ukrainian soldiers remain in the tunnels beneath the fortress-like steelworks that have been under siege by Russian forces for weeks.

Ukrainian officials said the last of several hundred civilians were evacuated from the plant on Saturday.

"Mariupol defender Valeria Karpylenko — nicknamed "Nava" — became a bride, wife and widow at Azovstal," said a post on the Ukrainian National Guard Facebook page on Wednesday

"On May 5, Ukrainian border guard Andriy — nicknamed "Beard" — and a girl from Azov got married, and he died three days later.

"She promised her lover to get out of the siege — and live for the two of them."

Along with the post were photos of the couple getting married in their uniforms as well as before the war.

The post also included a message from Ms Karpylenko.

"You have been my lawful husband for three days," it said. "And for all eternity you are my love.

"My dear, my caring, my courageous … You were and are the best.

"I have your last name, your loving family and memories of a happy time together."
