The Tennessee Titans weren’t able to get anything going on offense against the Denver Broncos on Sunday’s 16-0 loss on the road.
The issue is nothing new, as the Titans have struggled offensively all season, but the Week 6 contest saw something we haven’t witnessed — the benching on starting quarterback Marcus Mariota.
Mariota was 7-of-18 passes for 63 yards and two interceptions before head coach Mike Vrabel pulled the quarterback after he threw his second interception of the day.
Titans head coach Mike Vrabel did not commit to a starter for next week’s home matchup against the Los Angeles Chargers, but at this point, giving the nod to Tannehill seems to be the right move.
Mariota has been inconsistent all season, and made several poor throws that could have set the Titans up to score on Sunday. He was unable to make the easiest of throws — even a swing pass.
Coming in at the bottom of the third quarter, it didn’t take Tannehill long to outdo Mariota, and gave the Titans their first true chance of the day to put points on the board.
He didn’t make the best case for himself, though, when he threw an interception to Broncos defender Kareem Jackson to give the Broncos the shutout toward the end of the game.
It’s clear Tannehill wasn’t perfect, and failed to add any points, but he seemed to be the better option overall.
He finished the contest mostly accurate, completing 13-of-16 passes for 144 yards with the interception.
It will be interesting to see who is at the helm when the Titans face the Chargers at 3:05 p.m. CT on Sunday in Nissan Stadium.
