Mario Pasalic transfer, Ethan Ampadu wait: What next for Chelsea's 27 loan stars after lockdown

Chelsea have 27 players out on loan, from Brazil to Burton via Italy and Spain, but owing to the coronavirus pandemic the short-term future of many has been thrown into doubt.

A couple, such as Ike Ugbo at Roda and Tiemoue Bakayoko at Monaco, have had their seasons already voided while many others are taking wait and see approaches.

Football.london has compiled a list of the loanees and outlined their current statuses at their temporary clubs with explanations of what is likely to happen in those leagues.

Goalkeepers

Nathan Baxter, Ross County, 30 June 2020

The 21-year-old has made 14 appearances since overcoming a shoulder injury at the start of the season. The Scottish Premiership has yet to make a decision but latest reports suggest they are trying to find a solution despite the lower leagues already being voided.

Jamal Blackman, Bristol Rovers, 31 May 2020

Joined the League One side in January but unclear if that will be extended should the EFL decide to conclude the season.

Defenders

Ethan Ampadu, RB Leipzig, 30 June 2020

Has not played as much as he would like but Bundesliga is expected to be the first major European league to return and he will see out the rest of his deal. Could still end up staying until the end of the campaign.

Juan Castillo, Ajax, 30 June 2020

Left-sided 20-year-old has been heavily involved with the Amsterdam club’s second string but Dutch football was called off last month.

Jake Clarke-Salter, Birmingham City, 31 May 2020

A sporadic feature for the Championship side. Unclear what the next step will be.

Josh Grant, Plymouth Argyle, 31 May 2020

Initial loan was extended in January with talk that it could be made permanent. No development since but expected to stay until the end of EFL campaign should it resume.

Marc Guehi, Swansea City, 31 May 2020

Went to the Championship club in January with an option to extend next season. He will remain in South Wales to continue his development but there are high expectations at Cobham that he can become a first-team regular.

Matt Miazga, Reading, 31 May 2020

American international has been a key player in Berkshire and could extend his stay if the campaign resumes. Unlikely to have a role at Stamford Bridge.

Richard Nartey, Burton Albion, 31 May 2020

Defender has done well in League One. Another who could see out the rest of the campaign should it resume.

Baba Rahman, Mallorca, 30 June 2020

Signed a new deal before heading on loan despite not having much of a future at Chelsea. Spanish football intends to resume and he will likely stay for the duration.

Dujon Sterling, Wigan Athletic, 31 May 2020

Another with high hopes, the right back has struggled for fitness because of a severe hamstring issue. Will continue on loan to develop further but short-term is unclear.

Davide Zappacosta, Roma, 30 June 2020

Made just one appearance before rupturing a cruciate ligament. Out of contract in June 2021 but Roma had been keen on extending his stay. Serie A is preparing to return but no date has been agreed. Regardless, he is expected to be out until autumn.

Midfielders

Tiemoue Bakayoko, Monaco, 30 June 2020

In a state of flux after the French season was canned and now some doubt whether the principality side can afford to pick up his option to buy. Has little to no chance of a future in West London.

Trevoh Chalobah, Huddersfield Town, 31 May 2020

Midfielder has done well in fits and starts for the Championship side and could see out rest of the campaign if it restarts.

Danny Drinkwater, Aston Villa, 30 June 2020

Troubled campaign for the former Leicester City man, with off-field issues and injuries placing his future in doubt. Has no future at Chelsea or Villa. Next step remains unclear.

Conor Gallagher, Swansea City, 31 May 2020

In a similar situation to Guehi having moved to Wales in January following a dazzling spell at Charlton Athletic. Has a chance of becoming a Chelsea first team player if he continues to progress.

Kenedy, Getafe, 30 June 2020

The Spanish side have an option to buy the Brazilian but they are likely to be impacted financial by the pandemic.

Jacob Maddox, Southampton Under-23, 31 May 2020

In a state of flux after the under-23 campaign was prematurely ended last week but Saints had an option to buy built into the deal.

George McEachran, Cambuur, 30 June 2020

Dutch football has been cancelled meaning the midfielder’s first loan experience was not all it was hoped to be. Will be given another move to continue his progress.

Reunited with Antonio Conte despite injury issues. Inter have an option to buy built in and the Serie A season is expected to resume.

Loaned to the Brazilian club for the season. Unlikely to return to Chelsea.

Has impressed for the Champions League’s surprise package, meaning his value has theoretically gone up. Atalanta have an option to buy and believe he is worth a lot more than that fee. Likely to make the move permanent unless the pandemic has altered the Italian side’s financial outlook dramatically.

Has kicked up fuss about being sent on a seventh loan. Signed a one-year contract extension before going to Portugal but has since said he wants to force a permanent move.

Charlie Brown, Royale Union SG, 30 June 2020

Scored for fun in academy football and went to Belgium in January. Did not feature too much and is set for another loan next season. High hopes that he can progress into a credible option in the Premier League.

Izzy Brown, Luton Town, 31 May 2020

A shining light for the team bottom of the Championship Could remain and is not part of Lampard’s plans.

Forward

Ike Ugbo, Roda JC, 30 June 2020

Did well in the Dutch second tier for a club in considerable off-field trouble. The 21-year-old has 12 month remaining on his Chelsea deal and will likely head on loan again.
