Mario Lemina gives Manchester United transfer boost with Champions League comment

Mario Lemina has confirmed he does not plan to be a Southampton player next season.

The 26-year-old, who joined Saints from Juventus two years ago, has emerged as a transfer target for Manchester United this summer.

Arsenal and Leicester are also keen on Lemina, although none of the Premier League clubs interested in the Gabon international have met Southampton's asking price for him.

Lemina was left out of Southampton's traveling squad for their pre-season training camp in Austria earlier this week, with Ralph Hasenhuttl prepared to move the player on.

The midfielder told France Football he has known for some time that he wants to leave Southampton.

"I am physically preparing myself at the training centre, with a few other players including Charlie Austin and Jordy Clasie," Lemina said.

"I did not accompany the team in training in agreement with the coach. He wants to build his group with the players who want to stay at the club, so he left me out.

"As early as last year, I had set my conditions: I wanted to go elsewhere this summer."

Lemina confirmed it is his intention to remain in England but refused to rule out a move elsewhere.

"The best for me would be to stay there, but I do not close the door to any club, no country," he said. "Today after four months of injury, I do not target anything in particular. I aspire to play in the biggest clubs, now we will see what I will propose.

"I had chosen to leave Juventus for Southampton to have more play time, I got it. I made a good impression in England, I had good returns at a certain time, so I hope clubs will not have a short memory."

In a boost to United's hopes of signing the player, he added: "It (playing in the Champions League) is a bonus. If I have the opportunity to play this season, why not? But I'm really trying to regain consistency, become an important player in a team with high goals.

"I need to play. That's really my priority. I want to show everyone what I can do."
