Mario Gotze admits regret after turning down Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool to sign for Dortmund

Mario Gotze has once again spoken about his regret at not signing for Liverpool.

The World Cup winner with Germany was heavily linked with a move to Anfield in the summer of 2016. It was Jurgen Klopp’s first summer window as Liverpool manager, and was keen to bring Gotze to the club.

Rather than move to Merseyside, Gotze opted to leave Bayern Munich in favour of joining his old club Borussia Dortmund, who he had left three years previously. After not being successful at signing Gotze, Klopp moved to bring Sadio Mane to Liverpool from Southampton.

After leaving Dortmund in October to join PSV Eindhoven in October 2020, Gotze recently made the move back to Germany. This summer he signed for Eintracht Frankfurt, who won the Europa League last term.

Gotze has previously spoken about his regret about not signing for Liverpool when he had the chance. Now in another interview, he has done so again and has made a claim about his former Dortmund boss Klopp.

“Liverpool had finished eighth in their first season with Jürgen and had not qualified for the Champions League,” Gotze told German news outlet Bild.

“Even in previous years, it wasn’t the club that always played at the top.

“Dortmund had previously played a top season under Thomas Tuchel. BVB was on the up. Jürgen was still building something.

“In retrospect you have to say: Liverpool would have been better.”
