Mario Balotelli backs Rangers boss Steven Gerrard as Liverpool flop forgives cutting verdict

Mario Balotelli's time at Liverpool might not have been as successful as he hoped when he made a £16million move to Anfield from AC Milan.

As a replacement for Luis Suarez, he had big shoes to fill and didn't really do it as he scored just one Premier League goal in 16 games before returning to Milan on loan and then joining Nice on a free transfer.

Steven Gerrard was critical of him in his autobiography and reckoned it was too much of a gamble to take him to Liverpool, bellieving he didn't have the mentality to play at the top level.

He said: “There was no friction between us. We got on fine. I still tried to help him and I kept looking for chances to praise him.

“But I could see Mourinho had been right when he said Mario Balotelli is unmanageable.

“He is very talented with the potential to be world class, but he’ll never get there because of his mentality and the people around him.

“Balotelli’s always late, he always wants attention, he says the wrong things on social media.

“For me, he doesn’t work hard enough on a daily basis. You’re always fighting a losing battle with Balotelli. He does too many things wrong.”

But that hasn't caused Balotelli to hold a grudge against the Rangers boss as he named him in his dream XI during a question and answer session.

The eccentric Italian surprisingly left himself out of the team as he plumped for Lionel Messi and Brazilian legend Ronaldo as his strike pair.

There was no place for Cristiano Ronaldo but Gerrard is lined up in midfield beside Andrea Pirlo, Yaya Toure and Antonio Cassano.

The full XI

Julio Cesar, Maicon, Fabio Cannavaro, Alessandro Nesta, Maxwell, Andrea Pirlo, Yaya Toure, Steven Gerrard, Antonio Cassano, Lionel Messi, Ronaldo.
