Mario Balotelli has accepted a Football Association charge over the Super Mario image that attracted accusations of racism and antisemitism. However, the Liverpool striker is to offer mitigation for reposting the controversial image on Instagram.
Balotelli was charged by the FA last week after posting an image of the Nintendo character that contained the words: “jumps like a black man and grabs coins like a jew.” The 24-year-old claimed to be making an ironic, anti-racism statement on social media and has submitted details of the racist abuse he has suffered during his playing career to the FA. He also apologised for any offence caused and pointed out that his foster mother is Jewish. The Italy international has not requested a personal hearing but will submit written mitigation to the regulatory commission that will consider the charge under E3 of the FA guidelines citing “aggravating factors”.
Balotelli could be banned for one match if found guilty of bringing the game into disrepute but is more likely to be fined for an offence on social media.
