Mariners shortstop makes perfect throw to no one in particular

Hey, here’s a wacky one: With one out and runners on first and third in the top of the 6th inning of a game between the red-hot Astros and the very, very not red-hot Mariners on Monday, Houston hitter Yuli Gurriel tapped a slow grounder to Seattle shortstop Dylan Moore.

Because the grounder pulled him to his right and was not moving particularly quickly, Moore did not appear to have much chance to start an inning-ending double play. So when he saw baserunner Alex Bregman break for the plate, he made a perfect off-balance throw home to try to prevent the run from scoring.

Just one problem: Mariners catcher Omar Narvaez had already left his station to back up first base, which would’ve been good hustle if he wasn’t needed for something different and more important:

Oof. Former minor league catcher Matt Paré offered more context via Twitter:

Since starting the season 13-2, the Mariners have lost 36 of their last 48 games and are now buried in the basement of the AL West.
