Marine insurer North P&I creates new jobs after launching new product line

Newcastle based shipping and marine insurer North P&I Club (North) has created new jobs after launching a new line of insurance.

North, which employs 270 people in Newcastle and a further 110 in offices around the world, is launching the new insurance product line North Hull on July 1 as part of the company’s ongoing growth and diversification plans.

The new line is aimed at ocean-going vessels and will complement the hull and machinery (H&M) insurance product already available from Sunderland Marine, part of the North Group.

To support the move, North has recruited a number of underwriting specialists, including Nick Wolfe, James Sutton and Alex Fuller, while also promoting Andrew Hearne to director responsible for members, traders and charterers in the Europe region.

Paul Jennings, CEO of North P&I Club, said: “With shipping more important than ever to the international supply chain – bringing vital food and medicines to British shelves – we’re focused on continuing to support the maritime industry, providing an additional line of insurance for those larger vessels that keep supplies moving across the globe.

“Diversification is a significant feature of North’s overall strategic direction and this move will bring financial benefits for our membership.

“Everyone at North is extremely excited with these new developments and the expansion of the team.”

The new jobs comes as the firm supports charities drawing attention to the welfare of seafarers during the Covid-19 pandemic.

With shipping playing a vital part of the international supply chain to keep shelves stocked, many crews remain at sea and won’t see loved ones until restrictions ease.

North P&I Club (North) has ringfenced £40,000 of its North 150 Fund for maritime charities, including the Sailors’ Society.

From providing mental health resources to grants for struggling seafarers and their families, North’s donation will make a big difference to those maintaining the supply chain at sea.

Mr Jennings said: “The impact of this pandemic is huge, and the welfare of seafarers at this time is an issue close to our hearts.

“As a 160-year-old business with our roots here in the North East, we’re passionate about the shipping legacy of our region, and determined to support those working in the maritime industry in challenging times.

“Our seafarers play a pivotal role in ensuring our supply chain keeps going. They are among the unsung heroes of this crisis. Without them, we wouldn’t have access to everyday essentials such as food and medicine. That’s why we’re doing what we can to show them our support.”
