Marina review: Bubblegum pop anthems from the girl next door

Such is her girl-from-next-door appeal that Marina could play a stadium and still not get noticed on the Tube ride home.

This makes watching her glide around the stage dressed like a cross between Tinker Bell and Kate Bush an endearing experience, with the 34-year-old Welsh singer possessing an everyday relatability that means she’s not completely detached from her fans like so many of her pop peers.

Even if her dancers don’t add much to tonight’s proceedings and are decked out in threads that look like they were stolen from a village pantomime, Marina’s uptempo energy during tracks such as I Am Not A Robot and Hollywood is completely irresistible.

The playfulness of Bubblegum Bitch, a song that channels the spirit of Britney Spears at her most syrupy sweet, also goes down a treat. Yet too much time is dedicated to jangly piano ballads that don’t really go anywhere.

Marina performs To Be Human, a clunky song that screams out “IT’S TIME TO BE SERIOUS!”, in front of a screen showing archive footage of protests through the ages. Yeah, it’s as clumsy as it sounds.

Instead, she is at her best when she’s able to let loose with euphoric, dependable pop anthems. On the bouncy Orange Trees, she cathartically belts out the line “this is how it feels to be free” while most of the crowd lose control of their knees.

If Marina can lean more heavily into dancefloor fillers in the future then this show will surely graduate from good to unmissable.
