Marina Granovskaia urged to accept Thomas Tuchel's urgent transfer demand before it's too late

Chelsea Football Club may have a lion on their crest, but you wouldn't be surprised if it was a Chihuahua because the Blues have been all bark and no bites in the January transfer window.

And, while I'm no dog expert, the dogs that usually bark the loudest are the ones with more to hide, whether it be that they've found a threat or are just in urgent need of signing a left wing-back this month.

The Blues are well aware of their threat; Liverpool and Manchester City - the big dogs, are extending their lead. Meanwhile, Arsenal, West Ham, Tottenham and Manchester United are on Thomas Tuchel's tail.

But, Roman Abramovich and Marina Granovskaia are yet to give their side any treats this month as Chelsea continue to suffer the consequences.

Daniel Childs and Scott Clayton spoke live on the Carefree Chelsea 'Talking Transfers' show to delve into the Blues' activity - or lack of - in the January transfer window despite Tuchel's urgent need for a new wing-back.

Clayton kickstarted proceedings by outlining his frustrations with Chelsea's inability to bring Emerson back from his loan at Lyon.

"It's crazy, isn't it," he said. "They're not even accepting £4m for a player that we wanted to get off our books for a good number of years, and here we are trying to bring him back because we're struggling - it's a crazy situation."

Clayton then highlighted how a congested fixture list had hampered Tuchel's ability to communicate his ambitions to the board this month thoroughly.

"I'm hoping that Tuchel keeps his focus on Sunday's game, gets through Sunday's game and then we have an international break where he'll have a good week to sit with the board and think of a plan," he said.

"If Emerson can't be the player we can sign, let's get somebody else. I do want them to get a left wing-back, a loanee, but let's weigh up the options because we can't go the rest of the season with Alonso because he's not hitting the levels we need."

Childs added by accepting why Emerson may be Tuchel's preferred choice despite the Italian full-back not winning many plaudits among the Blues fan base.

"Emerson is not a great option," he said. "This is a player who Chelsea quite clearly wanted to get rid of.

"We have been presented with a freakish injury situation, and I can understand why Tuchel would want him back because he knows the player, he's worked in the Premier League before, knows the environment at Chelsea, spoken very well of him."

Childs concluded by addressing another issue Chelsea also has on their hands, seeing various Cobham graduates push for moves away from the club.

"I am no fan of Chelsea, especially in January like they did with Emerson originally in 2018, signing a player under £20m who then doesn't radically improve the first-team and maybe blocks a youngster who we could promote. Then we struggle to sell."

Childs make a point moments later that he has sympathy for Chelsea and what a difficult decision they have now.

How the next ten days of the transfer window will play out is anyone guess but a wing-back of some kind has to be added to the squad.
