Marina Granovskaia told to make Chelsea transfer decision after Manchester United clash

Some Chelsea supporters have called on the club to recall Billy Gilmour from his Norwich City loan spell in the January transfer window.

The Scotland international, who is currently on a season-long loan at the struggling Canaries, impressed for Dean Smith's team as they were beaten 1-0 by Manchester United on Saturday evening.

Gilmour came very close to scoring for Norwich at Carrow Road, with his low shot deflected just wide of United's goal, with the 20-year-old really standing out for the hosts in the centre of midfield.

With Chelsea's injury problems in midfield, that sees Mateo Kovacic (Covid) and N'Golo Kante (injury) both sidelined at the moment, the likes of Gilmour and Conor Gallagher have both been linked with returning from their respective loan spells - though football.london understands that Gallagher is not expecting to return to Stamford Bridge before the end of the season.

That is what some Blues supporters, when taking to Twitter, have been suggesting should happen regarding Gilmour after he impressed against Man United.

Gilmour spoke to Norwich's official website after the defeat on Saturday night and admitted it was a tough one to take for the side, who ran United right down to the wire.

The Chelsea loanee said: "It is a disappointing result but we played really well. We showed togetherness and created a lot of opportunities but again, it is the goals. We need to start scoring goals.

"We moved the ball up the pitch well but it is just that final touch again. We need to take our chances when we create them.

"It is a hard one to take, we gave it our all. I am not sure if it was a penalty or not. It is just one of those things in football, you need to take it.

"We need to believe that we are going to go and score. There is opportunities there for us. We just were not at it in front of goal."

Under Daniel Farke, Gilmour struggled for first-team football, but has been more present in the side since Smith took over at Carrow Road.

When he was somewhat of a bit-part player under Farke, Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel called on the Scottish midfielder to embrace the challenge of his loan spell.

Tuchel said this at the start of November: "I spoke to Daniel and Billy about the situation and we will make the decision in January.

"He left looking for more minutes and game time at another club and the challenge is for him to fight his way through.

"Things are not going as well as he perhaps hoped but it's not the moment to cancel the whole project or open talks to bring him back.

"Sometimes these weeks and months arrive when the situation doesn't seem to be going the right way - you just have to hang in there and show your quality and make sure you help your team, no matter how.

"That sharpens the character and I am sure it will be a big chapter in Billy's career.

"It is only the start of November and there are still months to go and a lot of time to prove he has enough quality to help Norwich be a better team."
