Marina Granovskaia's transfer brilliance has given Chelsea key defensive edge over title rivals

Marina Granovskaia has done a lot of great work for Chelsea in the transfer market.

Be that the incredible sales of Alvaro Morata for £60 million to Atletico Madrid or Eden Hazard for £88 million to Real Madrid, business which helped to tee up an incredible summer of spending the following year as the likes of Kai Havertz, Timo Werner, Ben Chilwell and Edouard Mendy arrived at Stamford Bridge.

The low fees negotiated to drive the best deals for Chelsea have helped cultivate Granovskaia's reputation as one of the best directors in football, and the club's strong stance in refusing to bow to Sevilla's £85 million demand for Jules Kounde on deadline day only further vindicated her nickname of the 'iron lady'.

Saturday evening's victory over Brentford in the Premier League has helped to reveal another transfer masterstroke Chelsea fans took glee in pointing out in wake of the win.

Thomas Tuchel's surprise decision to give Malang Sarr his league debut in place of the injured Antonio Rudiger completed a back-three who were all under the age of 26.

The defensive trio of Sarr, Andreas Christensen and Trevoh Chalobah provided a surprisingly inexperienced look with only five Premier League appearances between Sarr and Chalobah, while the more experienced Dane has become a key member of Tuchel's side.

Despite a late onslaught from Brentford which forced Edouard Mendy to perform heroics to ensure the Blues retained their slim lead, the evening will no doubt prove to be highly beneficial for the young defence as they walked away from an intense test with a clean sheet - it's worth pointing out that Virgil van Dijk and title rivals Liverpool conceded three against the Bees last month.

However, while the Chelsea backline's youthful look was definitely a talking point, what grabbed supporters' attention the most was the combined cost of Tuchel's back-three - a whopping total of absolutely nothing!

Both Christensen and Chalobah came through the club's academy at Cobham, whilst Sarr was signed on a free transfer last year after his contract with Ligue 1 outfit Nice expired.

Chelsea's brilliance is highlighted even further when you consider Manchester United's centre-back pairing for their trip to Leicester - a game in which they shipped four goals - cost a total of £100 million, thanks in no small part to Harry Maguire's extortionate £80 million fee. Paul Scholes' recent comments on Chelsea's defence are beginning to look even more nonsensical.

None of Chelsea's three centre-backs for their clash with Brentford have enjoyed a particularly easy route to the first team.

Christensen, after some difficulty, has reached the best form of his Blues career under Tuchel, maturing into the elegant defender many hoped he would following early signs of promise in the academy. The 25-year-old is soon expected to sign a new long-term deal with the club to secure his future at Stamford Bridge.

Chalobah has been one of the surprise stories of Chelsea's season so far, breaking into the starting lineup for the opening league game of the season at home to Crystal Palace where he scored a brilliant goal to mark the occasion. Since then he's been entrusted by Tuchel to start several more league games, looking a composed figure in a team looking to compete for the title.

Sarr's sudden promotion came from out of nowhere, with his only other competitive appearance coming against Aston Villa in the Carabao Cup last month. His strong performance demonstrated the squad depth Tuchel has at his disposal, but also his potential to become a very valuable player despite arriving on a free transfer.

Granovskaia's brilliance continues to be felt across different areas of the Chelsea first team and Blues fans should feel very lucky we have one of the smartest negotiators in the game who will hopefully continue to strengthen our team.
