Marina Granovskaia's summer signing has already transformed Chelsea

Chelsea are already seeing the rewards of signing experienced Brazilian defender Thiago Silva, says Garth Crooks.

The former Tottenham forward has hailed the Chelsea number six's influence during their goalless draw at Manchester United and says that, without him, Edison Cavani would have scored his maiden Premier League goal.

Silva had an imperfect start to life at Stamford Bridge, conceding three goals against relegation tipped West Bromwich Albion.

But since then the 36-year-old has not leaked single goal in outings against Crystal Palace, Sevilla and United.

"Chelsea have not had a player at the back like this for some time," said Crooks as he named the defender in his team of the week.

"Defenders don't come more accomplished than Silva. The former Brazil international has brought a desperately needed calm to the Blues' defensive line-up."

Already a key part of Frank Lampard's defence, Silva's absence was missed greatly against Southampton a week ago.

Ralph Hassenhuttl's side came from two goals down to snatch a point on London but with Silva back in the side against Sevilla and United, Chelsea were much improved.

"His positional sense and reading of the game are his specialities," continued Crooks.

"Had it not been for Silva, his former Paris St-Germain team-mate Edinson Cavani would have almost certainly found himself on the scoresheet.

"At 36, Silva looks like he's never been in a pub in his life," he added. "What a pity for Chelsea he's not a few years younger."
