Marina Granovskaia's Donnarumma Chelsea transfer decision proven right as Edouard Mendy shines

Chelsea could have signed goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma in the summer according to reports.

According to journalist Fabrizio Romano on Twitter, the Blues were given the opportunity to sign the Italy international after he left AC Milan at the end of his contract.

Donnarumma won Player of the Tournament in the European Championships as his penalty saves guided the Azzurri to victory in the competition.

The 22-year-old then joined Mauricio Pochettino at PSG on a free transfer and has had an indifferent start to life in the French capital.

In Ligue 1 he has been competing for a starting spot with Keylor Navas, making only four starts in the league so far and conceding four goals.

Instead of going for the shot-stopper, the Chelsea board decided to stick with Edouard Mendy as "he’s our goalkeeper for next years too".

The goalkeeper joined last season from Stade Rennais and has seen his performances and stock continue to rise since his move to Stamford Bridge.

The faith in Mendy has already paid off as the Senegal international put in a Man of the Match performance to earn his side three points in a close 1-0 victory over Brentford on Saturday.

The 29-year-old had to make six saves in a busy match to receive his 20th Premier League clean sheet since joining the club.

The clean sheet also ensured that the Blues have the joint best defensive record in the league, conceding just three goals all season. The only team to have matched that record is Manchester City, who have also only conceded three goals.
