Marina Granovskaia must seal major £31m transfer handed to Chelsea by Rafa Benitez in January

Chelsea have recently been linked with Everton’s frozen out left-back, Marcos Alonso who has been unsettled at the Toffees ever since Rafa Benitez became their manager.

The dreaded news that Ben Chilwell would be out due to a knee injury against Juventus, in the Champions League last month. But, it’s some good news that the English international is not looking like he might not need surgery on his ACL.

Marcos Alonso who initially sustained his position as the first choice at left-back for Thomas Tuchel has come back into the team to fill in because of the injury after Chilwell pushed his way back into the starting eleven.

Lucas Digne wouldn’t be a bad signing in many ways to give Chelsea another option at wing-back. Something that Chilwell has been so good at since he came to Chelsea is providing creativity from a wide position at the back.

Digne is similar in the sense that he’s an offensive player, who is good in dead-ball situations and can put in some great crosses to get players forward. Chelsea really could benefit from having this sort of player who can be rotated in and out of the team.

But, perhaps Digne can also solve the issue of a lack of goals coming from the centre-forwards. He can become a set-piece expert that will allow players like Romelu Lukaku and Timo Werner to be on the lookout for his crosses into the box.

Chilwell already has really flawless technique on crosses. If that sort of technique can be honed and Digne given the role of the ‘set-piece specialist’ at wing-back Chelsea could be onto a winner.

It might also allow Chelsea fans to breathe a sigh of relief. He had a fantastic start to the season and fair play to him. It almost looked like a settled period in a Chelsea career for once.

But the Spaniard can be erratic and unreliable at the back, which is not going to help a nervy back four which could yet lose Antonio Rudiger in the summer transfer window.

But Digne could also slot in as a solutionto this issue. He has experience in the Premier League and knows what it takes to be a consistent performer at left-back in the league. With Chelsea looking to lose a whole lot of experience over the summer after contracts are winding down to a close, an experienced player will be vital.
