Following Chelsea’s recent match against Everton, it is easy to argue that the Blues are lacking a clinical finisher in their squad. Despite their £97 million transfer for Inter Milan star Romelu Lukaku, frustrations are building in front of goal, and times like this call for a clinical goal scorer.
Unfortunately, Romelu Lukaku had tested positive for COVID-19 as well as Timo Werner. Two of Chelsea's strikers have not yet lit up the Premier League with their stats this season, given the circumstances.
Thomas Tuchel has been forced to use a false 9 system to benefit the players he has to his discretion but it was not enough to finish off a young inexperienced Everton side.
Chelsea's last stroke of hope left in the summer and it may come back to bite them.
There have been moments where the Blues have failed to kill off a game and I cannot help but wonder if a helping hand from Tammy Abraham may have sealed the deal in these instances.
When it came down to it, the likes of Timo Werner, Romelu Lukaku and Kai Havertz, our three striking options, have only managed to score 14 goals between them all season. At this stage in the season, this is a cause for concern.
All three players have proven their worth in Serie A or the Bundesliga. Whilst Tammy Abraham is still young, he has proven his worth as a Premier League player. The youngster may not be of the same calibre as a Romelu Lukaku, but Chelsea are able to see out the odd jammy game with a second striker who is a traditional number 9.
One thing that we have all learnt as Chelsea fans is that Havertz and Werner cannot be described as traditional strikers. Havertz plays more as a fluid false 9 whilst Timo Werner excels as a second striker on the pitch. When it comes to having striker instinct, Abraham could have been that second option to Lukaku, similar to Olivier Giroud.
Whilst it was destined for Giroud to leave Chelsea due to the lack of game time for the Frenchman, we may have prematurely gifted Jose Mourinho's Roma side. This season alone, Abraham has scored 10 goals in 23 matches. We could use his fitness and goal scoring form at the Bridge right now and it could turn out to be an unfortunate regret.
Only time will tell as the season progresses. I hope that our forwards are able to turn this drought around. More than often, the defence has had to bail Chelsea out of sticky situations, however, the defence is now having troubles of their own, leaving Chelsea in the same predicament that they were in this time last year.
A lot of creativity in front of goal, just no end product.
