Having helped Chelsea to Champions League glory before a triumphant Euro 2020 campaign with Italy in the summer, Jorginho's stock was as high as it's ever been.
However, a somewhat underwhelming start to the 2021/22 campaign has seen the midfielder face a lot of criticism.
Jorginho answered his critics in style at the weekend, spearheading his side's charge to a much-needed three points against Leeds United as he coolly slotted home two second-half penalties.
While Jorginho, who joined Chelsea in 2018 for a whopping £50 million, hasn't enjoyed the best form of his career in the last few months, he's continued to put his body on the line despite carrying a knock, a situation that's handed Thomas Tuchel a reminder ahead of the January transfer window.
Carefree Chelsea duo Scott Clayton and Jake Stokes spoke live on the Carefree Chelsea show to delve into Jorginho's display against Marcelo Bielsa's side and to look at how the Italian's qualities continue to be overlooked.
Scott kickstarted the discussion by reminding fans that the Jorginho has battled through the pain to ensure his side's midfield hasn't been completely decimated by injury and pointed out that his ability on the ball was key to the win over Leeds.
"He's playing through the pain barrier having had a bit of a back problem," he began. "We definitely needed his ability to keep the ball and he did well."
Jake then claimed Jorginho continues to be underappreciated as a player despite ranking third at the 2021 Ballon d'Or awards, adding that slotting home a last-minute penalty to win the match isn't as easy as some may think.
"I think he's a player that's not disrespected but underappreciated sometimes at Chelsea," he began.
"We know obviously he had that dodgy touch against Man United which hit the headlines like the draw was his fault but in that game he was good and I think again against Leeds you saw that where even if it isn't the prettiest display and it isn't a 7-0 against Norwich, he still has that mentality that just sets him apart.
"He can clutch up in those games where you need him and I think, as I said, he's sometimes a little bit underappreciated.
"What he did in the final minute with the penalty, it's not easy. It would've been pretty scary when you've got the whole stadium watching you decide a potentially massive three points."
