Marina Granovskaia breaks silence on why Chelsea made the decision to seal Thiago Silva transfer

Chelsea director Marina Granovskaia has admitted that the Blues made the decision to make Thiago Silva their latest summer arrival because of the experience he will bring to the squad to help the club's younger players.

The Blues announced the arrival of the vastly experienced Brazilian international on Friday morning, meaning he became their third arrival of what is proving to be a busy week at Stamford Bridge, following on from the arrivals of Ben Chilwell from Leicester City and former Nice defender Malang Sarr.

Though Silva's arrival is a free-transfer for Chelsea, following his departure from Paris Saint-Germain at the end of the 2019/20 campaign, the Brazilian's wages are not thought to come cheap, meaning the Blues hierarchy have once again offered Frank Lampard their backing.

Despite that, the 35-year-old, who has been on the books of AC Milan in the past, will add plenty of experience and quality to Lampard's defensive options, with the Blues conceding more goals than any other club that finished inside the top-10 in the Premier League last season.

Now, following confirmation of his arrival in West London, Chelsea director Granovskaia, who is responsible for bolstering Lampard's squad, something which she has done to perfection so far this summer, has opened up on why the Blues made the decision to add him to their armoury, admitting that the club have no doubt about the quality he will bring the table.

Granovskaia told Chelsea's club website: "We are delighted to be able to add a player of Thiago Silva’s proven world-class credentials to our squad.

"Having performed at the highest level for many years, we have no doubt his experience and quality will complement the many exciting talents we already have here.

"Thiago will be an excellent fit and we hope he can add some new trophies to his impressive list of honours."

Silva becomes the Blues' fifth major signing of the summer, following the arrivals of Hakim Ziyech, Timo Werner, Chilwell and Sarr.
