Marilyn Monroe outfit from 'There's No Business Like Showbusiness' sells at auction for £216,000

Rex Features

An outfit worn by Marilyn Monroe in one of her most memorable film roles has been sold at an auction in Los Angeles for $280,000 (£216,000).

The famous ensemble comprises a black silk bandeau top, floor-length floral skirt and straw hat Monroe wore in the 1954 comedy There’s No Business Like Show Business.

It was just one of the costumes worn by the Hollywood actor to be sold under auction on Friday.

Held by Beverley Hills based company Julien’s Auctions, the auction also included Monroe’s floor-length, red silk, long-sleeved sequined dress from Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, which was sold for $250,000 (£193,000).

Other items on offer were the bright yellow period gown worn by Monroe in River Of No Return (sold for $175,000) and the actor’s black silk crepe cocktail dress, which was thought to be worn for a press conference for Some Like it Hot.

There were more than 115 items included in the auction, including pieces of furniture she owned.

All items were sold at no reserve.

While many sold for high values, none came close to a record-breaking sale in 2016, when the gold crystal dress Monroe wore while singing “Happy Birthday” to then-president John F Kennedy in 1962 sold for $4.8m (£3.7m).
