Oct. 30--Marianjoy Rehabilitation Hospital in Wheaton has agreed to join the Northwestern Medicine health system, as part of a breakup of a Catholic health care organization.
Founded in 1972, Marianjoy is part of a group sponsored by the Wheaton Franciscan Sisters. The order also announced Thursday that it is shedding ownership of hospitals in Iowa and Wisconsin.
For Northwestern, the transaction will continue its expansion in the Chicago suburbs. In 2010, the system acquired Lake Forest Hospital and last year it took over Cadence Health, which added Central DuPage Hospital in Winfield and Delnor Community Hospital in Geneva. Anchored by its namesake hospital in Chicago, Northwestern also has a pending agreement to acquire KishHealth, a two-hospital system based in DeKalb, that is waiting for regulatory approval.
"The addition of Marianjoy will enhance our care continuum for patients throughout our system," Dean Harrison, CEO of Northwestern Memorial HealthCare, said in a statement.
The two organizations have signed a letter of intent and are finalizing terms of the transaction.
Marianjoy, which has 127 beds, had patient revenue of about $64 million for the year ended June 30, according to the Illinois Department of Public Health. Northwestern, including Cadence, has about $3.7 billion in revenues.
