Marian Keyes says end of alcohol addiction 'was like saying goodbye to the love of my life'

Author Marian Keyes has said she mourned for alcohol at the end of her addiction, admitting: “It was like saying goodbye to the love of my life.”

The bestselling novelist, who has been open about her battle with alcoholism in her 20s, also reflected on how a suicide attempt ultimately forced her to confront her problem.

Speaking on Angela Scanlon’s Thanks A Million podcast, Keyes, 56, said: “What killed me at the time was when I reached the end of my alcoholic drinking and realised that I had to stop.

“And I was 30 and felt like simultaneously more ancient than the planet and also like ridiculously young.

“And I honestly felt that my life was completely destroyed and the next whatever number of years that I lived would be just like crawling through a desert trying not to drink.

“And because everything I did back then kind of centred around alcohol, you know, when I could next drink and when I could get the money to buy it, and you know, how could I get away with that?

“I look back and it’s 26 years since I’ve had a drink and my life has just been so beautiful since.

“I would never have known that I could feel
so happy about not drinking.”
