Marian Finucane book of condolence opens at RTE Radio Centre in Dublin

Marian Finucane's colleagues and fans have been flocking to RTE Radio Centre to sign a book of condolence for the beloved broadcaster.

The veteran radio presenter passed away on Thursday aged 69.

She died suddenly as she slept at her home in Naas, Co Kildare in a death which has shocked the nation.

Heartfelt tributes have poured in for the RTE Radio One host who has been remembered as the “voice of reason”.

Taoiseach Leo Varadkar said last night he was “stunned and deeply saddened” at the news.

He added: “She was a true broadcasting legend who reshaped current affairs radio in Ireland. Ireland will miss her voice. Weekend mornings will never be the same again.

“I spent many hours in the studio with Marian. She was thorough, courteous and professional.

“I’m very sad to think we won’t hear her voice again on the radio."

Joe Duffy said: “She was a most gracious, welcoming voice and personality – [she had] a fantastic personality, a fantastic sense of humour.”

RTE director general Dee Forbes, said: “Marian was a broadcaster of immense capability.

“A household name, she was first and foremost a tenacious journalist with a zeal for breaking new ground.

“Multi-skilled, she forged a distinguished career on television, as well as undertaking significant charity work in Africa. Ireland has lost a unique voice. RTE has lost a beloved colleague.”

Marian is survived by her husband John and son Jack. Her eight-year-old daughter Sinead died from leukaemia in 1990.
