Mariah Carey is set to join the likes of Alicia Keys and recent wardrobe malfunction expert Lenny Kravitz, with a guest appearance on hugely popular television show Empire.
Lee Daniels, creator of the Fox and E4 series about a powerful family in hip-hop, announced Carey’s planned appearance on Wednesday, during a ceremony where Carey received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
“Watch her on Empire, you guys. She’s coming on Empire,” Daniels said to loud cheers from fans, in one of several speeches given before Carey was presented with the star.
The Oscar-nominated director didn’t elaborate on what role Carey would play, or how she might interact with the show’s diva, Cookie Lyon.
Neither Fox nor Carey elaborated on Daniels’ announcement, but the network is scheduled to present its plans for Empire and other upcoming shows television critics’ panel on Thursday.
Carey, 45, has previously worked with Daniels before, appearing in films The Butler and Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire, which earned Daniels two Academy Award nominations. Carey was nominated for ensemble cast Screen Actor’s Guild awards for both films, and in 2010 won a Palm Springs international film festival award for breakthrough performance for her role in as social worker Ms Weiss in Precious.
Carey has won five Grammy Awards since releasing her self-titled debut album in 1990. She has also served as a judge on Fox’s American Idol competition series for one season, and is in the middle of a nine-month performance residency at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas.
