Margot Robbie style file: charting the star's sartorial rise from Neighbours to Hollywood

In a relatively short amount of time in the spotlight, Margot Robbie has cemented her reputation as a style savant. As adept at effortless daytime chic as she is at causing a stir on the red carpet, the Aussie actress regularly tops best dressed lists and has been a brand ambassador for Chanel since 2018, meaning she’s rocked many a fabulous Chanel frock over the last four years.

This week though, a wave of excitement has rippled through Robbie’s fanbase, as speculation swirls that her contract with the French superbrand might have ended, which could free up her clothing choices.

The rumours have started because Robbie wore two full-looks from Bottega Veneta twice in a week. Last night the Australian actress attended the 13th annual Governors Awards in Los Angeles wearing a slinky, green cut-out gown designed by the Italian fashion house’s newly-appointed creative director Matthieu Blazy.

The ruched, one-shoulder dress followed a head-to-toe Bottega ‘fit the star wore out in New York last Wednesday. Her chic, off-duty look comprised a striped blazer from the resort 2023 collection, the white tank top and the leather “denim” jeans from Blazy’s debut winter 2022 collection plus the brand’s signature Intrecciato woven leather bag. “Never ever stop dressing in Bottega!” Commented one fan, perfectly encapsulating the fan reaction to her latest sartorial choices.

Since the late Karl Lagerfeld tapped Robbie to be a brand ambassador for Chanel in 2018, Robbie has been contractually obligated to wear the brand for the majority of her red carpet looks. Most notably, she attended the 2018 Academy Awards wearing a white gown with draped-off-the-shoulder embroided detailing that was customed designed by the German designer himself. As well as a silver bespoke Chanel mermaid gown to the 2021 Oscars. “It always feels like a special moment when I’m wearing Chanel,” she told Vogue at the time.

However, with these slew of knockout Bottega looks fashion insiders are wondering whether a Bottega partnership is on the horizon.

It makes sense that luxury fashion houses should want the 32-year-old as their muse. Since her breakout role in The Wolf of Wall Street, Robbie has become a figurehead for ultra glamour and downtown cool girl sophistication - just look to her latest viral cover for the December issue of Vanity Fair.

For the cover Robbie donned a skintight black Alaïa dress complete with a cut out revealing her toned torso and low-rise skirt that was cinched in at the side, while the inside spread featured the Australian actress in a completely sheer black long-sleeve Elie Saab gown that was adorned in sequins and intricate beading. Styled by Anastasia Barbieri, the starlet also wowed in a fluffy white Alexandre Vauthier Haute Couture coat which she wore with nothing else underneath, apart from a pair of black leather pointed-toe Maison Margiela pumps.

The polished photoshoot is in keeping with the starlet’s elegant style choices. Ever since The Wolf Of Wall Street’s press run, Robbie has been working alongside celebrity stylist Kate Young and together they have evolved Robbie’s love of classic silhouettes with party girl finishings - such as her backless sequined Saint Laurent dress at the 2014 Vanity Fair Oscar Party and gold sequined, deep plunge ensemble by Diane Von Furstenburg at the 2016 Oscars - into a more refined offering.

From 2016 onwards Robbie shifted heavily into Old Hollywood, favouring romantic, billowy silhouettes, like her lilac Giambattista Valli fall 2019 haute couture gown for the Bombshell premiere or burnt orange Oscar de la Renta fall 2019 chiffon gown.

These days when she’s not in Chanel or Bottega, Robbie likes to power dress in Proenza Schouler, attending the WSJ Magazine Innovator Awards earlier this month in a white blazer and matching wide-leg flared pants from the cuban designer’s spring 2023 collection. She also turns to Magda Butrym for strong-shouldered dresses, which she sported on Jimmy Kimmel last year.

Although Robbie deleted her Instagram account - “ciao for now” she signed off last August,  we’ve remained privy to her incredible street style through paparazzi flicks. Most recently Robbie paid a visit to her friend and Suicide Squad co-star Cara Delevingne in a Gen Z-approved preppy Prada sweater and pleated skirt ensemble, complete with autumn’s hottest footwear trend: loafers. She’s also shown she likes to experiment with the high street, too. Last year a grey three piece suit from Mango became a sold out hit after she wore it during a press run for her film, Amsterdam.

However her most infamous looks of late are from the set of her upcoming film Barbie, where candid shots of Robbie and her co-star Ryan Reynolds in matching pink cowboy suits and lycra broke the internet. In fact, they even spawned “Barbiecore”, a TikTok-pushed trend which has seen A listers and Gen Z alike to sport top-to-toe hot pink. With over the hashtag #Barbiecore now having over 157 million views on TikTok, Robbie is demonstrating she’s a style icon no matter what role she takes on.
