Margot Robbie has said she is “definitely not” ready to have children with her British film director husband — joking that they are already struggling to cope with their two dogs.

The actress, 28, whose breakout role was in Wolf Of Wall Street, told Porter magazine that Tom Ackerley had recently adopted a second dog which was causing her sleepless nights.

The couple met on the set of Suite Française and they tied the knot in 2016 on the Gold Coast in Australia, her home country.

Asked if she was ready for babies, Robbie told Porter magazine: “No! Definitely not. Three days ago my husband stopped by a dog shelter on the way back from the airport, and we now have a pitbull puppy.

“We already have a two-year-old who still acts like a puppy. I love him but he’s a handful, and for the last three days I haven’t slept.

“I’m like, ‘We’re fostering her for the week’, and my husband’s saying ‘No! We’re keeping her’ and I’m saying, ‘We absolutely cannot and if anything, you are now cementing in my mind that we cannot have kids. I can’t cope with two puppies, let alone children.’”

But Robbie added: “If I’m looking into my future 30 years from now, I want to see a big Christmas dinner with tons of kids there. But definitely not at the moment. That’s 100 per cent certain.”

The couple adopted rescue puppy Boo Radley last year. Last month Ackerley posted a picture of their latest pet, the pitbull, on his Instagram, with the message: “Newest member of the fam. Hi Belle!”

This year Robbie was nominated for an Oscar for her leading role in I, Tonya. She plays Elizabeth I in upcoming drama Mary Queen Of Scots alongside Irish actress Saoirse Ronan, 24, who plays Mary Stuart.

Robbie said it was daunting to take on such an “iconic” role, adding: “She’s been portrayed on screen by some of the world’s greatest actresses, including Cate Blanchett and Judi Dench. Who am I to think that I could join that legacy? So initially I thought, ‘No chance, no way.’ I didn’t think I could pull it off.”

Robbie is also appearing in Quentin Tarantino’s latest project Once Upon A Time In Hollywood. The film is about the Manson family murders, with Robbie cast as actress Sharon Tate, one of the victims.

The actress is close friends with British models Poppy and Cara Delevingne, who she said live a far more rock-and-roll life than she does. “Cara would say, ‘I’m going to this mud-wrestling thing tonight.’ And I’m like, ‘I have a meeting at 7am — it’s a Wednesday night.’”
