Margot Robbie and Christian Bale's $80million film Amsterdam bombs at the box office

David O. Russell 's new murder mystery film, Amsterdam, looked set to be a huge success, with a massive budget of $80million and a star-studded cast including Christian Bale, Margot Robbie and comedian Chris Rock.

But the film has flopped at the box office and took in just $6.5million after suffering from poor reviews, according to studio estimates.

The movie currently has just a 34% critics score on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes.

The bomb will likely be a huge disappointment for the film's director whose cast also included John David Washington, Taylor Swift, Anya Taylor-Joy, Rami Malek and Robert De Niro.

Amsterdam, which opened in 3,005 theatres across North America, focuses on the mysterious murder of a US senator in the 1930s.

It follows a group of three friends — Robbie, Bale and Washington — who are framed for murder and have to work to try and clear their names.

Despite the A-list cast, audiences failed to come out in droves and the film gained a poor per-screen average of $2,163 — one of the worst debuts of Russell's career following his success with Silver Linings Playbook and American Hustle.

Amsterdam somehow managed to fare even worse worldwide, with $3.5 million for a worldwide debut.

Amsterdam was beaten at the box office by Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile and Smile.

Lyle, Lyle Crocodile is a musical based on Bernard Waber's children's book featuring Shawn Mendes as the voice of a computer-generated reptile. It debuted with an estimated $11.5 million in ticket sales.

Horror film Smile topped North America's box office for a second weekend, racking up an estimated $17.6million.

The well-regarded film has now earned $89.8 million worldwide from just a $17 million budget.
