Although there was an increase in people outside Tuesday after the state of emergency related to the novel coronavirus was lifted for Tokyo and surrounding prefectures and Hokkaido, the numbers only slightly increased compared to Monday, according to research carried out by NTT Docomo Inc.
According to the research, among major stations and commercial districts, Tokyo Station saw an increase in people of 5.2% at 3 p.m. Tuesday, compared to the same time Monday. Shinjuku Station saw an increase of 6%, and Shibuya Center-Gai street saw an increase of 3.6%.
In the other four prefectures, Yokohama Station saw an increase of 5%, Chiba Station saw an increase of 3% and Sapporo Station numbers increased by 0.2%. On the other hand, the west side of Omiya Station in Saitama saw a decrease of 0.5%, which shows that even though the state of emergency has been lifted in these areas, there hasn't been a stark increase in the number of people venturing from their homes.
This research was conducted through the use of Mobile Spatial Statistics, which collects anonymous data from smartphone tracking software and makes estimates on the number of people within 500 meters of major stations or commercial districts.
