Margaret Ferrier MP police investigation continuing under Crown Office direction

Police investigations into rogue MP Margaret Ferrier’s covid-rule breaking journey from Scotland to London and back have moved up a gear with a report being sent to prosecuting authorities.

Police Scotland issued a statement on Wednesday confirming that officers are making further inquiries after having sent a file to the Crown Office.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “We have submitted an initial assessment of the circumstances to Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service and are carrying out further enquiries under their direction.”

The move came as Ferrier made an intervention at Prime Minister’s Questions in the Commons, asking a question by remote audio link.

The Rutherglen and Hamilton West MP, who is suspended from the SNP, has been under investigation since it emerged in September she travelled to London to sit in the House of Commons and then returned to Scotland while infected with Covid-19, risking exposure to others.

The Metropolitan Police has said it was taking no further action against the MP who travelled by train from London to Glasgow after testing positive for coronavirus.

The force said Margaret Ferrier had not breached laws in England which require people to self-isolate because she was tested before they came into effect.

The case is still being pursued by Police Scotland as Ferrier resists pressure from the SNP and opponents to resign her seat.

The MP lost the SNP whip last month, with Nicola Sturgeon describing her behaviour “utterly indefensible”.

But Ferrier has defended herself and said she was “hung out to dry” by the party in the furore following the revelations.

She has since finished her period of self-isolation and voted by proxy in the Commons and last week asked a question by video link in a Cabinet Office session.
