Margaret Ferrier dining companion MP self-isolates in Covid infection scare

A Northern Irish MP is in self-isolation after sitting at the same dining table as Covid scandal politician Margaret Ferrier.

Democratic Unionist Jim Shannon was identified as a close contact of the Scottish MP but his party said seating arrangements included proper social distancing measures.

Ferrier felt ill at the weekend, took a test, but still travelled from Glasgow to London, spoke in Parliament, received a positive result then took the train home.

She has been suspended from the SNP and immediately faced calls from party leader Nicola Sturgeon to stand down as an MP.

On Wednesday evening, the Commons Speaker's Office alerted Shannon, who represents Strangford in Co Down, that he had been identified as a close contact of an individual diagnosed with Covid-19.

A DUP party statement added: "Upon receiving this news, Mr Shannon immediately self-isolated and on Thursday afternoon he received a negative Covid-19 test result.

"Mr Shannon sought and at all times has followed the advice of Public Health England and the House of Commons’ Covid-19 team in dealing with every element of this incident.

"As a precaution, Mr Shannon is self-isolating at home."

Shannon has been an MP since 2010 and is shadow DUP spokesman on human rights and health.
