Mare and newborn foal die because vet stopped by bike ride road closures

A mare and her newborn foal died when they could not be reached by a vet following extensive road closures for a bike race.

Owner Helen van Heyningen says she is 'devastated' over the loss of her horse Penny who died at 10.30am on Saturday morning.

Vets were called when the foal's back legs became stuck, causing Penny to die just one hour after going into labour.

Mrs van Heyningen claims vets were blocked from accessing her farm in Knowle, Warwickshire, following road closures for the Vélo bike ride this weekend.

The 100-mile cycling event saw roads across the West Midlands and Warwickshire closed off to traffic for an estimated 17,000 competitors.

'My half a heart daughter had life-saving surgery at one day old - and I was 50 miles away'

"We threatened to block the road with our horsebox because the mare was bleeding to death," she told the BBC.

She said she had "never seen anything so awful in all my life and was "appalled that they could let an animal suffer like that".

Her horse Penny - who was described as being "part of the family" -  was used to breed horses for show jumping.

Her offspring sold for up to £60,000 and was part of the family's livelihood.

Organisers have been criticised for the widespread disruption which left some residents feeling "trapped."

One cyclist taking part in the event tragically died while taking part in the event.

The man - in his 50s -  came off his bike after around 23 miles at about 7.50am.

According to Warwickshire Police it was a steep section of road with tight left and right bends.
